What does our Governing Body do?

 

 

All maintained schools are required to have a Governing Body.  The main roles of the

Governing Body, as laid down by the Department for Education are to

  1. Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  2. Hold  the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; 

  3. Oversee the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

 

The Governing Body of The Grange believes it is important for details of what this actually

involves  is shared with all members of the school community, and have therefore prepared

the following overview of our activity for this academic year.

What we do

 

  • We meet as FGB at least three times a year, usually 5 or 6, and as and when required to consider all aspects of the school’s performance.

 

  • We conduct our business through a variety of committees that meet throughout the school year.

 

  • We ensure that Promoting British Values is at the heart of The Grange.

 

  • We take on responsibility for children with Special Educational Needs, Looked After Children, Safeguarding, Safer Recruitment, Health and Safety etc.

 

  • We monitor and carry out   Health and Safety Inspections and reports

 

  • We employ our own Clerk who is trained by Oxfordshire County Council

 

  • We scrutinise and agree policies

 

  • We actively recruit new Co-opted governors from outside of the immediate school community.

 

  • We evaluate the performance of the Governing Body

 

  • We keep up-to-date working knowledge of Government legislation and educational drivers.

 

  • We keep well informed about new educational topics through membership of the National Governors Association and utilise and collate relevant information from Oxfordshire Governor Services, DfE Data Dashboard and other websites/published information which is then relayed to other members

 

  • We visit the school regularly for a variety of reasons, both formal and informal: eg school assemblies; meetings with the HT and staff; school trips; class visits

 

  • Some of us serve on the Standards committee.  We look at all aspects of  reporting at the school and the attainment and progress of pupils from all year groups, by pupil characteristics, ethnicity, gender, Pupil Premium, Sports Premium, SEND, CLA; monitor SEN provision; consider evidence from all sources, not just the HT; monitor progress and delivery of school improvement aims and review and update many of the school’s statutory policies

  • Some of us serve on the Finance committee.  We regularly scrutinise finance reports to examine the schools financial performance; monitor progress and delivery of finance related priorities & aims; scrutinise the financial year budget; undertake forward financial planning; perform periodic benchmarking assessments; review external assessments of the school’s financial management; monitor and evaluate how the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) and Sports Premium Grant (SPG) is used.

 

  • Some of serve on the Personnel committee.  We ensure that the right staff are employed by the school to ensure it runs effectively; we support the LiLT in the recruitment of new staff; we are responsible for ensuring the Staff Appraisal policy is effectively implemented and confirm the pay decision for the Headteacher and all teachers; we are responsible for ensuring the well-being of staff; we review and agree school policies relating to Personnel matters.
