Computing

Intent

At The Grange CE Primary School, our computing curriculum is designed to provide pupils with a rich, relevant and ambitious education that equips them with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Our intent aligns with the school’s vision of fostering excellence in teaching and learning by ensuring all pupils:

  • Use technology creatively, confidently and purposefully

  • Develop strong computational thinking, problem-solving and logical reasoning skills

  • Understand how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully

  • Are prepared for future learning and life in a digitally connected society

We believe that technology enhances learning, supports collaboration and enables pupils to access, explore and present ideas in innovative ways. High expectations for behaviour, responsibility and independence are reinforced through The Grange Way.

Implementation

Computing is taught through a well-sequenced, progressive curriculum built around the Purple Mash scheme of work, which provides structured coverage, flexibility and strong assessment tools.

The curriculum is organised around three core strands:

  • Computer Science – pupils learn about algorithms, programming and computational thinking

  • Information Technology – pupils create, organise and evaluate digital content

  • Digital Literacy – pupils learn to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly

Key features of implementation include:

  • Explicit teaching of computing knowledge and vocabulary

  • Regular opportunities for pupils to practise and apply skills through hands-on activities

  • Clear progression from simple instructions and exploration to more complex coding and problem-solving

  • Differentiated support to ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and succeed in computing

Online Safety
Online safety is a key priority and is taught explicitly through dedicated lessons and revisited regularly across the curriculum. Learning is reinforced through assemblies, themed events such as Safer Internet Day, and links with PSHE and Relationships Education.

Assessment
Pupils’ progress is monitored through formative assessment and end-of-unit outcomes, supported by the 2Simple Computing Assessment Tool. Assessment information is used to inform teaching and ensure pupils build secure knowledge over time.

Cross-Curricular Links (Computing)

Computing at The Grange is purposefully embedded across the wider curriculum, enabling pupils to apply digital skills meaningfully while protecting subject-specific knowledge.

  • English – pupils use technology to draft, edit, publish and present writing, supporting communication and audience awareness.

  • Mathematics – coding, algorithms and data handling reinforce logical thinking, sequencing and problem-solving.

  • Science – pupils use digital tools to research, record results, present data and evaluate findings.

  • Geography and History – digital mapping, timelines, research and presentations support subject knowledge and enquiry.

  • Art and Design – technology is used creatively to design, edit and refine digital artwork.

  • PSHE – digital literacy supports understanding of online behaviour, relationships and wellbeing.

These links ensure computing is relevant, transferable and embedded, while computing knowledge and skills remain explicitly taught and progressively developed.

Impact

The impact of the computing curriculum is seen in pupils who:

  • Use technology confidently and independently

  • Apply computational thinking to solve problems

  • Understand and demonstrate safe and responsible online behaviour

  • Transfer digital skills effectively across the curriculum

By the time pupils leave The Grange, they are well prepared for secondary education and future digital learning, with a secure foundation in computing knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Behaviour and Attitudes (Computing)

Pupils show positive attitudes towards computing. They collaborate effectively, persevere when problem-solving and demonstrate responsibility when using digital technology.

Personal Development (Computing)

Computing supports pupils’ personal development by:

  • Building confidence and independence

  • Encouraging creativity and innovation

  • Developing resilience and logical thinking

  • Supporting digital citizenship and online safety

Leadership and Management (Computing)

Computing is led effectively to ensure clear progression, consistent expectations and high-quality teaching. Curriculum coverage, assessment and impact are monitored regularly. Staff are supported through training and access to high-quality resources to deliver computing confidently and safely.
