British Values at The Grange

At The Grange, we actively promote and embody British Values as an integral part of our school culture, curriculum, and daily life. British Values are not taught as a stand-alone topic; they are embedded across all subjects, relationships and experiences so that pupils understand what it means to be a respectful, responsible and active member of a diverse society.

Our shared ethos, The Grange Way, underpins everything we do and reflects the principles of British Values in action: kindness, respect, responsibility, fairness and community.

Our Intent

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Understand and respect democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

  • Develop their own moral compass and sense of justice

  • Recognise their rights and responsibilities as citizens

  • Value diversity and celebrate difference

  • Feel confident to express their views respectfully

  • Understand how their actions impact others and the wider world

Through this, pupils develop the knowledge, attitudes and character needed to contribute positively to modern Britain.

How We Teach and Live British Values (Implementation)

Whole-School Culture

British Values are modelled daily through:

  • The Grange Way

  • Positive relationships and restorative approaches

  • High expectations for respect, inclusion and fairness

  • Celebration of diversity and cultural understanding

Assemblies and Picture News

Our weekly Picture News assemblies play a central role in bringing British Values to life. Pupils engage with current national and global issues in an age-appropriate way, developing:

  • Critical thinking

  • Respectful debate

  • Empathy

  • Understanding of democracy, law, rights and responsibilities

These assemblies encourage pupils to form opinions, listen to others and understand their role as responsible citizens.

Personal Development (PSHE, RSE & SMSC)

Through SCARF, circle time and termly Personal Development days, pupils explore:

  • Rights and responsibilities

  • Equality and inclusion

  • Relationships and consent

  • Mental health and wellbeing

  • Online safety and digital citizenship

Across the Curriculum

British Values are reinforced meaningfully through learning in all subjects:

  • RE – respect for different beliefs, faiths and worldviews

  • History & Geography – understanding society, culture, power and justice

  • English – debate, discussion, empathy and perspective-taking

  • Computing – online safety, digital responsibility and respectful communication

  • MFL (Spanish) – respect for other cultures, languages and identities

  • Art & Music – cultural expression, identity and shared experiences

  • Science & DT – ethical decision-making, sustainability and responsibility

  • PE – teamwork, fairness and sportsmanship

Pupil Voice and Leadership

Pupils actively experience democracy through:

  • School council elections

  • Pupil ambassadors (wellbeing and anti-bullying)

  • Leading initiatives such as Anti-Bullying Week and Make Me Smile Day

  • Contributing ideas through surveys and discussions

This ensures pupils understand how their voice can shape their community.

Impact – What This Means for Our Pupils

Because British Values are lived, not just taught, our pupils:

  • Show respect, kindness and fairness in their behaviour

  • Can explain what British Values mean and give real examples

  • Understand the importance of rules and laws

  • Feel confident to express opinions while respecting others

  • Recognise and challenge discrimination or unfairness

  • Know how to stay safe, including online

  • Appreciate cultural diversity within school and beyond

  • Leave The Grange as thoughtful, responsible and active citizens
