Intent
At The Grange, the Geography curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ curiosity about the world, their understanding of physical and human geography, and their sense of place at local, national and global scales.
The curriculum is knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced, enabling pupils to:
-
Build secure locational and place knowledge
-
Understand key physical and human processes and how they interact
-
Use and apply geographical skills, including map work, fieldwork and data interpretation
Geography supports pupils in becoming informed, responsible global citizens who care for people, places and the environment, reflecting The Grange Way.
Implementation
Geography is taught through well-structured units that clearly build on prior learning and revisit key concepts such as place, scale, environment, sustainability and interdependence.
-
Lessons follow a clear sequence: knowledge acquisition → application → enquiry
-
Key vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited
-
Maps, atlases, fieldwork and digital resources are used regularly to develop geographical skills
-
Opportunities are planned for comparison, reasoning and geographical enquiry
Teaching is adapted to ensure all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, can access the curriculum and achieve well.
Cross-Curricular Links (Geography)
Geography at The Grange is purposefully connected to wider curriculum learning, enabling pupils to apply and deepen understanding across subjects while maintaining a strong disciplinary focus.
-
Reading – High-quality fiction and non-fiction texts support geographical knowledge, vocabulary development and comprehension of complex global issues.
-
Writing – Pupils write for a range of geographical purposes, including reports, explanations, persuasive texts and fieldwork outcomes, applying subject-specific vocabulary accurately.
-
Mathematics – Pupils apply mathematical skills through map scale, coordinates, distance, data collection, charts and statistical comparison to interpret geographical information.
-
Science – Geography links closely with science through the study of climate, weather, environmental change, ecosystems and sustainability.
-
History – Pupils develop a sense of place over time by linking geographical knowledge with historical settlement, migration and land use.
-
Computing – Digital mapping, data handling and research skills support geographical enquiry and interpretation.
These planned links ensure pupils see geography as relevant, connected and meaningful, while core geographical knowledge and skills remain explicitly taught and protected.
Impact
By the end of each key stage, pupils:
-
Demonstrate secure geographical knowledge and vocabulary
-
Can locate places accurately and explain physical and human features
-
Apply geographical skills confidently in new contexts
-
Show curiosity, respect and care for the world around them
Pupils are well prepared for further geographical study and understand their role in protecting and sustaining the environment.
Behaviour and Attitudes
Through enquiry-based learning and fieldwork, pupils demonstrate strong engagement, collaboration and perseverance. They listen to others’ viewpoints, ask thoughtful questions and show pride in their work, in line with The Grange Way.
