Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish)
At The Grange, we believe that learning a language opens doors to the wider world. Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum inspires curiosity, builds confidence in communication and develops pupils’ understanding of different cultures, identities and ways of life.
Our focus language is Spanish, taught from Year 3 to Year 6 by a specialist Spanish teacher, ensuring high-quality language learning and accurate pronunciation from the outset.
Intent
Our MFL curriculum is ambitious, vibrant and relevant. It is designed to ensure that all pupils:
-
Develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish
-
Build a secure bank of vocabulary, grammar and language structures
-
Understand how language works and how it connects to English
-
Develop a genuine curiosity about languages and cultures
-
See themselves as future language learners beyond Key Stage 2
We use the Language Angels scheme to structure learning in a way that is progressive, coherent and engaging. Content is reviewed annually so that our curriculum remains current, challenging and fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Languages.
Learning a language at The Grange also supports pupils’ personal development, helping them to:
-
Appreciate cultural diversity
-
Understand relationships between language and identity
-
Show respect for other countries, traditions and communities
-
Develop confidence in communicating with others
Our ultimate aim is that pupils leave Year 6 feeling willing, able and motivated to continue studying languages in secondary school.

|mplementation
Spanish is taught weekly in Key Stage 2 by a specialist Spanish teacher, ensuring consistency, strong subject knowledge and high-quality modelling of pronunciation.
We use the Language Angels scheme of work, which provides a clear progression through three teaching levels:
-
Early Language (Y3 / entry level) – foundational vocabulary, nouns, articles and simple phrases
-
Intermediate (Y4–Y5) – more complex sentences, adjectives, connectives and verb forms
-
Progressive (Y6) – opinions, justifications and irregular verb forms, leading to more fluent spoken and written language
Across all levels, pupils develop the four key language skills:
-
Listening – understanding spoken Spanish in different contexts
-
Speaking – practising pronunciation, conversation and confidence
-
Reading – decoding words, sentences and longer texts
-
Writing – constructing increasingly accurate and complex sentences
Grammar is taught discreetly and systematically within lessons so pupils can understand how Spanish works, not just memorise phrases.
Each 6-week unit includes:
-
Interactive whiteboard activities
-
Speaking and listening practice
-
Differentiated reading and writing tasks
-
Opportunities for extended writing
-
Revision and consolidation of previous learning
Pupils build a personal bank of core vocabulary and reference materials, helping them to recall and apply language over time.
Cultural Learning and Enrichment
Learning Spanish at The Grange is not just about language — it is about culture.
Where appropriate, we enrich learning through:
-
Spanish-themed assemblies
-
Cooking traditional foods
-
Exploring Spanish festivals and national days
-
Weather activities using Spanish maps
-
Learning about Spanish-speaking countries, traditions and lifestyles
This helps pupils connect language learning to real life and deepen their cultural understanding.
Cross-Curricular Links (MFL)
Spanish learning connects meaningfully to other subjects:
-
English – understanding grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary
-
Geography – studying Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries
-
History – exploring cultural and historical contexts
-
Art and Music – responding to Spanish artists and music
-
PSHE – developing respect, empathy and global awareness
These links ensure language learning is relevant, meaningful and embedded across the curriculum.
Assessment and Progress
Pupils’ progress is assessed regularly in:
-
Speaking
-
Listening
-
Reading
-
Writing
Teachers use the Language Angels Tracking and Progression Tool to monitor progress at individual, class and year-group level. This allows for targeted support where needed and ensures all pupils are challenged appropriately.
Pupils are also involved in self-assessment, helping them understand their own progress and next steps.
If any pupil is not making expected progress, early support is put in place to address gaps in learning.
Impact
By the end of Year 6, pupils at The Grange:
-
Speak Spanish with increasing confidence and accuracy
-
Understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish
-
Write longer, more complex sentences using correct grammar
-
Use conjunctions, adjectives and opinions in their work
-
Show curiosity and enthusiasm for languages
-
Demonstrate respect for other cultures
Most importantly, pupils leave The Grange prepared and motivated to continue learning Spanish at secondary school.
